The Fairy Godmother Project of Houston to host annual prom shopping weekend

The Fairy Godmother Project of Houston, a non-profit organization which provides free prom attire to students in the Houston area, is gearing up for its annual shopping day.

“We are grateful for the community’s involvement in cleaning out their closets for a good cause,” said Ellen Chang, president and founder of the Fairy Godmother Project of Houston.  “We provide everything but the date! “Prom is more than looking beautiful or wearing a pretty dress. Everyone should be able to attend their prom with their friends and classmates, regardless of their personal or financial background.”

Students will be shopping for their dresses on March 26 at DEFINE Body & Mind, 1945 West Gray, Houston, TX 77019.  Students will be able to receive one free prom dress and two other dresses for graduation and other special events. Students can also receive free shoes, jewelry, purses and cosmetics.

“DEFINE is so excited to host this year’s Fairy Godmother Project Shopping Day,” said Henry “Hank” Richardson, owner of DEFINE Body & Mind. “We are looking forward to helping high school students all over Houston and making their prom dreams come true!”

Gift certificates for tux rentals will be provided for male students and have been donated by Al’s Formal Wear.

“I remember my prom, and how much fun I had.” says Stuart Gaylor, President of Al’s Formal Wear. “Prom is such a wonderful American tradition and no student should be denied this rite of passage, which is why we love to work with programs such as Fairy Godmother Project.”

Volunteers will work as “personal shoppers” for the students by helping them select their attire and accessories. The photographer for the event is Victor Quinteros Marquina, a fashion photographer.

Reality TV star and Houstonian Erica Rose will offer students hair and cosmetic tips for their prom.

“I think it is important for all girls to be able to attend prom because it is such a milestone in a girl's life,” she said. “They should feel happy attending it and really bring out their inner princesses and that is why this organization is so great. It allows all girls to feel like a princess for a night and that is so amazing.”
